7 sources for rugs on a budget

Nothing ties together a room like an area rug. Without it, your furniture is just swimming in a sea of flooring without anything to anchor to. Area rugs provide visual interest, texture, and something soft beneath your feet. And most importantly – they protect your flooring, whether it’s carpet, stone or wood, from wear and tear.

A few weeks ago I received a message from a reader asking for tips on buying an area rug on a budget. My advice will always be to buy the best rug you can afford. A good quality rug will last for ages with the proper care. However, most of us don’t have several grand to spend on a rug.

Here are seven sources for rugs on a budget:

RugsUSA

This site comes highly recommended by some of my favorite home decor bloggers. The selection is fantastic – a rug to fit nearly every decorating scheme. Did I mention free U.S. shipping? Yay!

Ebay (Antique Rugs)

I never dreamed of buying a rug second hand. Then I read this post on one of my favorite home decor blogs, A View Along The Way. Blogger Kelly purchased a gorgeous antique Turkish rug from ebay. An authentic Turkish rug will set you back a pretty penny, but a used one can be quite affordable. As you’ll see, the rug was in pretty rough shape when it was delivered, however after a few at-home cleaning treatments, the rug looked vibrant and new. A great lesson in how a quality rug will last a lifetime or two.

Overstock

Overstock is one of my go-to sites for inexpensive furniture and rugs. My family has ordered a few things from this site over the years and has never been disappointed. Like RugsUSA, the selection is extensive and the prices are incredibly reasonable. Plus this site offers free shipping on U.S. orders!

Ikea

My very favorite rug purchase was this colorful shag rug from Ikea. It wasn’t cheap, but considering the quality, it was a dynamite buy. If your design aesthetic skews more contemporary/modern, than Ikea is a great source for affordable area rugs.

HomeGoods

HomeGoods is my favorite store for finding affordable home decor. A couple years ago I bought a rug for my entryway and I still love it. The downside to rug shopping at HomeGoods is the selection can be really hit or miss. But if you’re patient, you can score a really great piece for your home.

Pier 1

Pier 1 is a great place to find affordable rugs. Although the stores typically stock a limited number of styles, the company’s website has an extensive selection. I purchased a really great reversible area rug for my dining room at Pier 1 a couple years ago and still love it.

Target

Like Pier 1, Target has a limited in-store selection, however there are hundreds of affordable area rugs on their site. If you have the Target REDcard, you’ll save 5% on your purchase!

Where do you shop for rugs?

xoxo,

Andi
