Tips for Decorating a Home Yoga Studio

After posting my Pacific Northwest bachelor pad moodboard a few weeks ago, I immediately received a request from an APT reader asking for tips on decorating a home yoga studio. I welcome any excuse to flex my creative muscle, so I got to work creating a moodboard for her space. Developing a decorating scheme for a yoga studio was definitely different from any other room I’ve designed. How so? Typically, most rooms focus on four main design elements: color scheme, furniture, art and accessories. However, yoga studios are meant to be open, uncluttered spaces, so relying on great furniture pieces and lots of accessories to carry the room is out of the question. In the end, I chose a few functional accessories and an energizing color palette to make the room visually appealing, yet uncluttered.

An inviting and well appointed exercise room will encourage you to workout, keeping your fitness goals on track. Here are some tips for creating your perfect home yoga studio or workout space:

Choose a soothing wall color: Because the wall color was such an important design element in the space, I chose a color that was relaxing and earthy. Then I added lots of pops of color, like orange, peacock and magenta to make the room feel subtly energizing.

Add functional accessories: Among its many benefits, yoga helps relax and calm the mind. Therefore, it’s important to only choose accessories that are functional to the space. Too many visual cues won’t let the mind relax. A large area rug provides a bit of padding under your yoga mat. A basket is great for storing gear and exercise equipment. Lanterns add a warm glow for those days you decide to practice in the evening. Colorful throw pillows and floor poofs create an inviting space to meditate. And a small buddha statue is a reminder to take time to quiet the mind.

Hang inspiring artwork: Placing yoga-inspired prints on the walls is a great reminder to breathe and give thanks during your practice.

Bring in some natural elements: Plants are not just design elements, they can also help remove toxins from the air. Because yoga requires deep breathing, it’s important the air you breath is clean and fresh.
