This past Friday I decided to stop by an estate sale on my way home from work. I was hoping to score some of the old wooden printing press letters that were featured in the sale ad, however the good ones were already gone. I decided to do a quick lap around the house before I left and I’m glad I did! Because in the basement was this beautiful cane bench! (At least I think it’s a bench). Now there is something you should know about me – I am a sucker for cane anything. My grandma had cane beds in her home and I’m sure my love affair started with them.

Now I’m sure you’re thinking – “Andi, if you love cane so much, why would you buy furniture with the can busted beyond repair?” Well, the table was only $5.00!! And most of the details, including the cane trim on the rim of the seat, were still intact. When I saw the bench, my DIY brain immediately went to work, brainstorming ideas on how I could restore the piece. Here are some options:
1. Remove the broken cane and upholster a seat cushion that will cover the hole. Paint the wood a fun, poppy color.
2. Turn the bench into a table. Remove the broken cane and have a piece of glass cut to cover the hole. Paint the wood white or black.
3. Take the chair to a restoration specialist and have new cane installed in the seat.
My favorite option is number one. I think the restored piece will really look cute in my bedroom or in bathroom one day.
